Kennesaw Georgia Gun Law

Common Sense Test

If you are a criminal, would you rather attack someone who

a) Has no gun
b) Has a gun

Despite the common sense answer, there are those who would try to argue that having a gun does not make you safer.

Well.... Not in Kennesaw, Georgia!

On May 1, 1982, Kennesaw unanimously passed a law requiring "every head of household to maintain a firearm together with ammunition."

Sec. 34-21. - Heads of households to maintain firearms.

a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.

b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.

So, how has this gun law impacted Kennesaw?

After passage of the law, the burglary rate in Kennesaw declined and even today, the City has the lowest crime rate in Cobb County.

Below are a few honors that should probably be mentioned as well:

Top 25 Cities and Towns with the Best American Values – Newsmax Magazine
Kennesaw was selected as one of the "Top 25 Cities and Towns with the Best American Values" in the May 2009 edition of Newsmax Magazine.  In choosing Kennesaw, the editors cited the city's excellent school systems, low crime rate, air quality, green spaces and easily accessible family-friendly activities.

10 Best Towns for Families – Family Circle Magazine
Kennesaw was selected by Family Circle Magazine as one of the nation's "10 Best Towns for Families." The article appeared in the magazine's August 2007 edition.  The publication announced the results of its search to identify the best communities across the country that combine big-city opportunities with suburban charm, a blend of affordable housing, good jobs, top-rated schools, wide-open spaces and a lot less stress.  Family Circle is a monthly magazine with a circulation of 3.9 million and has approximately 20 million readers.
